10 Largest Countries Without Railroads

These are all countries with large areas of low population density. Except for Libya, Oman and Iceland, these are among the poorest countries in the world. Low population density or poverty, or both, are the main reasons for non-existent railway system.

10. Bhutan
 Photo Link

21 percent of the Bhutanese rural households have to walk from one to four hours to the nearest all-season road, and another 21 percent have to spend more than half a day.

Area:          38.394 sq km (14,824 sq mi)
Population:  708 427 inhabitants
Until 1961, because of the lack of paved roads, travel in Bhutan was by foot or on muleback or horseback. The 205-kilometer (130 mi) trek from the Indian border to Thimphu took six days. Today, transport in Bhutan comprises approximately 8,000 kilometres (5,000 mi) of roads and two airports, but no railroad. In 2005 the King of Bhutan and Indian Prime Minister agreed to carry out a feasibility study for rail links. In 2009, the new King of Bhutan finalised a plan to build a 11-mile (18 km) Indian gauge rail link funded by India.

The Most Luxurious Hearses

In the early 20th century the hearses were only for cery rich people. Cars for the funeral looked fantastic: they were decorated with columns, vases and sculptures, and they resembled the ancient ritual carriages. In Japan, expensive hearses resemble a miniature Buddhist temple. 32 more images after the break...

Top 10 Celebrities Unexpected Hobbies

It seems when celebrities aren’t doing their thing in the limelight, they’re busy doing something else that will lead to them returning to said limelight as swiftly as possible.  Whether that’s talking extensively about tiger blood or working on their next project depends on the celeb in question and their mental wellbeing, but surely there is more to life?  Everyone needs a hobby… And hobbies they have!  In their precious downtime, there are more than a few celebs who like to do a little collecting.  While there are some fairly regular behaviors out there, as you’d expect the a-list can’t be satisfied by being just like everyone else, oh no.  Here are the

10. Rodstewart — Railroad

“Do you think I’m sexy?” Not really, now I know you have a penchant for model railways.  Obviously collecting toy trains isn’t that crazy.  Nevertheless, being Rod Stewart and collecting model trains does strike one as bizarre.  Surely he should be entertaining super models and forcefully projecting raspy odes of affection about a girl named Maggie May?

The thing is, Rod isn’t alone when it comes to rock stars with less than rocking pastimes.  Apparently Ronnie Wood collects stamps (what a cliché) and, although not a collection, Alice Cooper has long loved nothing more than a round of golf, a fact he kept hidden during the heights of his snake-based antics. Link

10 Business Fakes in China

China has become known as the epicenter for producing a wide variety of counterfeit and bootlegged consumer products, but a trend has emerged over the past few years of faking full retail operations. A relatively new phenomenon, these rogue counterfeit businesses are a problem for companies that are trying to establish a brand image in China’s emerging economy. While some of these operations sell actual products from the legitimate companies, many simply copy the retail format, right down to even the colors and slogans. Other forms of this type of counterfeiting have followed in the wake of major consumer trends, where illegally copying products, brands, or intellectual property of successful companies has turned into big business in China. Khaju Bridge — Isfahan

Khaju Bridge is arguably the finest bridge in the province of Isfahan, Iran. It was built by the Persian Safavid king, Shah Abbas II around 1650 C.E., on the foundations of an older bridge. Serving as both a bridge, and a dam (or a weir), it links the Khaju quarter on the north bank with the Zoroastrian quarter across the Zayandeh River. Although architecturally functioning as a bridge and a weir, it also served a primary function as a building and a place for public meetings.[1] This structure originally was ornated with artistic tile works and paintings serving as a teahouse; In the center of the structure, a pavilion exists inside of which Shah Abbas would have once sat, admiring the views. Today remnants of a stone seat is all that remains of the king's chair. This bridge highlights one of the finest examples of Persian architecture at the height of Safavid cultural influence in Iran. In words of Upham Pope and Jean Chardin, Khaju bridge is "the culminating monument of Persian bridge architecture and one of the most interesting bridges extant...where the whole has rhythm and dignity and combines in the happiest consistency, utility, beauty, and recreation." 06 more images after the break...

Corinth Canal

The Corinth Canal is a canal that connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnesian peninsula from the Greek mainland, thus effectively making the former an island. The builders dug the canal through the Isthmus at sea level; no locks are employed. It is 6.4 kilometres (4.0 mi) in length and only 21.3 metres (70 ft) wide at its base, making it unpassable for most modern ships. It now has little economic importance. 12 more images after the break...

The Art Of Coloring Of Vintage Pictures

After the invention of photography it became clear that its main problem is lack of colors. So masters who coul colorize photos for exhibitions and print publications were found really quickly. The history of this craft, that became a high art, deserves a separate large study. Since colored photography was invented people colorize only history photos to "bring" them to a modern audience, enhance the sense of reality. In spite of all the "wonders of Photoshop" today, as before, colorizing the picture to full similarity with the color photography is almost impossible. But some virtuosos are sometimes almost succeed.

For example, Times Square, New York, 1943

I want to show the most interesting experiments on the coloring of the images presented on the historical photoblog Shorpy.  13 more images after the break...
